“Teaching an adult student to read and write English is personally rewarding and satisfying. The students are motivated, focused and really appreciative of the effort I'm making to help them.”

LVA provides 15 hours of free training to prepare you for sharing the gift of Literacy with another adult in the area. LVA with then match you with an adult who has met the educational qualifications. We have found that there are many reasons a person may not be able to read, write or understand English. They might have grown up in an area or home where education was not valued, or they may have left school at a young age to help their family by working. Or they might been educated in another country, in another language, and now they are trying to build a life in America. There are many reasons a person cannot read. Now you can be the reason they CAN. It is a transformative experience for the student and often for tutor as well. Won't you join us?
One Tutor-One Student
The essential interaction: one tutor with one student. It is during these sessions that LVA-CA's Mission becomes reality. Over time, with mutual respect, earnest effort and compassion, the impossible becomes possible.
Training the Tutors
Preparing volunteer tutors to teach someone a skill we take for granted is our organization's greatest challenge. Through the dedication of our trainers and tutors our Mission bears fruit in the most remarkable ways.
