Let’s Speak English:
Conversation Groups A Hit!
Many times, LVA students are learning English from their tutors but need more practice speaking during this week. With this need in mind, we offered two conversation groups this spring at our Pleasantville office. The groups met for two hours each on Saturday mornings/afternoons throughout March and April. The participants discussed topics of interest to them as well as current events; they used store flyers to discuss shopping and budgeting; and, they role-played different scenarios and making phone calls.
Jena Ring, a former LVA tutor, did a wonderful job facilitating the groups. Jena is currently a student at Stockton working on a certificate in English as a Second Language.
The enthusiastic students who attended agreed that the groups were very beneficial as well as being enjoyable and were sorry when they ended. Jena also found the experience to be enjoyable and rewarding.
We would like to continue offering conversation groups to our higher level English learners. If you would be interested in facilitating a group, please call our offices at 609-383-3377.

Literacy Volunteers-NJ 2008 State Conference |
On Saturday, May 3, a contingent of LVA Cape-Atlantic tutors, board members, staff and adult learners headed up to Mt. Laurel to attend the Literacy Volunteers-NJ annual State Conference, Literacy for Life.
Program Director Alexandra Chileen presented a workshop, “Get That Job,” that was very well received by students attending the conference and at the awards luncheon, Literacy Volunteer’s New Jersey Tutor and Students of the Year were announced. Our annual Tutor-Student Recognition Night, held on May 21st at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point, gave us the opportunity to thank all the people who make our program possible, to celebrate the achievements of our students and to applaud the dedication and diligence of our tutors, trainers and Board Members.
The 'roving mic' segment again proved popular as students shared their personal stories, told of their successes, and expressed their gratitude to their tutors for their friendship and caring.
Twenty-five tutors were recognized and awarded certificates for providing over fifty hours of tutoring last year and Board Member Quenby Kotila was recognized for five years of dedicated service on the Board of Directors.
This year’s event featured a 'Celebration of Language", readings of original poems by the winners of our first Annual Poetry Contest. Sixteen year old Adrianna Rodriguez received a standing ovation for her delivery of "Making Good Choices"; Leo Lieberman engaged the audience with "Women of the Bible"; and you could hear a pin drop as Cole Eubanks shared his intense depiction of a childhood with an abusive father in his poem "Clenched."
This year’s Tutor-Student Recognition Night was dedicated to the memory of Jack Thorpe, a Board Member for thirteen years, who recently passed away and who will be very much missed by all who knew him.
